History – Named in honor of U.S. Senator Stephen Douglas, Douglas County was created in 1861 as one of the original counties created by the newly formed Colorado Territorial Legislature. Although the county’s boundaries originally extended eastward to the Kansas state border, in 1874 most of the eastern portion of the county became part of Elbert County.
Real Estate in Douglas County – Douglas County is the seventh most populous county in Colorado. It is lightly wooded with broken terrain characterized by mesas, foothills and small streams. According to the US Census there are 132,251 housing units (2019) and the population is estimated at 285,465 (2019). Douglas County covers about 844 square miles and over 46% of all the land is public or protected land.
