History – Named for Thomas Jefferson, the county was created in 1859. Gold was discovered in present-day Englewood along the South Platte River in 1850 which precipitated the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. The residents and minors felt disconnected from the remote governments of Nebraska and Kansas so they formed their own territory which one month later became 12 counties.
